Branden's Blog: July 19, 2011

Howdy Bloggers!

Since my last blog, there have been a few changes in my job responsibilities. I started out working primarily with the challenge course and leading groups through team building and activities. Now that I have started doing office work, I am off the challenge course and looking for projects to work on. It is definitely a different atmosphere working in the office of an Outdoor Adventure program compared to being out in the field. It has been very tough trying to find my niche in the office because so many of the students are so knowledgeable and experienced in the program, where I am very inexperienced in the program and have been out of outdoor adventures for a long time now. I am still working to find some projects where I can apply my skills and still be able to learn and grow as a professional.

One great thing we got to do last week was help a charity organization called Sports Gifts. The organization's concept includes taking donations of old and used sports equipment and sending it overseas to poor kids so they can have equipment to play with. We brought over a ton of equipment, helped box it all up, then sent it overseas to those in need. It was so great to learn about the program and I can’t wait to try and bring this to Texas A&M. There is so much potential to help kids all over the world. We got to see some of the equipment they would play with before getting our old equipment. The kids would spend all day making a ball out of trash, just so they have something to do. It truly is amazing what one old, used and worn out ball can do for 20 kids.

The next few weeks are going to be very exciting! I will get to adjust my daily routine and throw in some facility and special events work. We have the soccer team, Real Madrid, coming in for two weeks to practice at our facility.  My tasks will include helping transport players to and from the field and the locker rooms and make sure everything is flowing properly. A big part will be crowd control because we are expecting hundreds of fans that will try to come see them practice. I will be spending the next couple of days making sure everything is ready for their arrival so the players can get here and go straight to practice.

Outside of work I have been able to do some really fun exploring. My friends and I all went to Rodéo Drive and explored some really awesome stores. The next day we bussed down to Venice Beach. Venice was an extremely unique area; honestly, my friends and I haven't seen anything like it!  The greatest part was being around a completely different mix of people and cultures; it was amazing to see all different parts of the spectrum in one place. We also went to see a Dodgers game; that was a really great experience, I mean who can go wrong with baseball! The next trip we have planned is hiking up to the Hollywood sign and looking out over Los Angeles. I am really looking forward to the next couple of weeks.  Check out all my pictures below...and stay tuned for details about all my upcoming adventures!

Thanks and Gig’ Em!
